My general impression of the Pennyroyal Green series is that it’s a bit uneven. Why does it feel like it’s been going on so much longer? Maybe it’s because Between the Devil and Ian Eversea is the 9th book in the series I don’t often stick with series for that long (though conversely I sometimes stick with them longer than I want to, if only because I kind of hate to give up in the middle of a series). So, you can just imagine how happy I was when I heard that Ellen Oh and Elsie Chapman, both from #WeNeedDiverseBooks, were coming out with a collection of short stories based on South, East and Southeast Asian myths and folklore. I’ve read about Hercules and Bernardo Carpio, Helen of Troy and Malakas at Maganda at school, but somehow, whenever I browse through the shelves of my favorite local bookstore, there are so few books about the latter – books with characters with similar names to mine, characters who physically resemble my black hair and brown eyes and brown skin.Įven now, at a time when authors and publishers seriously take into account diversity in their works and books, there’s still a big gap. Warning though…it does end on a cliffhanger. This was a great story, beautifully told and I loved seeing Elizabeth and Aderus work together and see the respect and attraction grow between them. It made for an interesting clash with our heroine, a doctor who is thrust into the job of ambassador between humans and the Askara. War and violence are just a part of their lifestyle, so much so that they are almost on the brink of extinction. Saving Askara would definitely be part of the sub-genre, not only does the hero look a bit like Predator he also has, what I imagine, is a similar culture. I feel like there should be a subgenre of monster romance for all the heroes that have a striking resemblance to the Predator, you know – the alien in the film Predator that first graced our screens in the 80’s. ![]() ![]() ![]() With the books now being made into major motion pictures, I've been taking the opportunity to rectify that situation, and I'm so glad to be discovering them. ![]() I've been a fan of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe since I was a child, but for whatever reason, I never got around to reading the rest of The Chronicles of Narnia.
